Quarterback controversy? What quarterback controversy?
Mark Sanchez survived the first phase of Tebow-mania, breaking training camp Thursday with a loud and clear message to the New York Jets and their followers: This is “my huddle.”
Sanchez also said he expects to be a top-10 quarterback this season, agreeing with teammate Bart Scott’s statement from Wednesday.
“Sure, you have to think that, you have to play like that,” Sanchez said. “As soon as you step on the field, you have to be the baddest guy out there — the toughest, the best, the most accurate, and you have to want to win.”
This is for a lack of better words, fucking fantastic. Remember when people were worried that having Tebow on the team was a bad thing? Well look how Marky Mark responded. Finally showing some damn spine to him and coming out confident and determined. The fact that he himself finally believes he’s a Top 10 quality QB will only help him when he hits a bump in the road. Last year was a complete mental meltdown. This year? I expect him to be able to bounce back after an INT or sack or hell even a shitty performance. Here’s the key part;
Sanchez called this “probably my most consistent camp,” noting he has dramatically reduced his turnovers — a bugaboo from last season. He also has demonstrated a take-charge attitude, claiming he’s more comfortable as a vocal leader, especially with the young wide receivers.
“When you come in the huddle, not to be selfish here, but this is my huddle,” he said. “Don’t talk, name your position quickly and let’s go get lined up.”
Most consistent camp? This is my huddle? Funny how much having your job on the line can bring out the best in you. And that is not a bad thing at all.
